When I was setting up my private practice, I spent a lot of time crafting the look and feel of my branding. It wasn’t just a creative exercise; I wanted something that carried deeper meaning. Eventually, I settled on the theme of Autumn, a season I’ve always viewed as a powerful metaphor for loss and change. It beautifully resonated not only with what I had witnessed in my clients’ journeys but also with my own life experiences.
As my practice has evolved, I have gained a deeper understanding of how nature can act as a mirror for life’s journey. Just as the natural world flows through its seasons, so do we, constantly evolving through cycles of beginnings, endings, and renewal. As you read, take a moment to reflect on your own season. Autumn: A Season of Letting Go and Transformation
I’ve always considered Autumn a season of immense beauty but also one of change, reflection, and letting go. Trees shed their leaves, reminding us that release is both natural and necessary for growth. The vibrant colours that once adorned the trees fade and fall, symbolising the beauty and bittersweet nature of transitions in our own lives. With the fading daylight and crispness of the air, autumn brings with it a mix of nostalgia, reflection, and sometimes sadness as we confront endings—whether it's the end of a relationship, a career shift, the loss of hope or moving to a new phase in life. Yet, there’s also acceptance, and with it, the understanding that letting go creates space for new beginnings.
In counselling, autumn's metaphor of letting go often parallels emotional challenges. Releasing what no longer serves us can be difficult, but it is a vital part of personal growth. This process can be complex and emotionally taxing, as it’s important to honour the past while also making room for what comes next. Letting go doesn’t mean forgetting; it means embracing change as part of life's cycle.

Winter: A Time for Rest and Inner Reflection
Winter is a season of dormancy, representing a time for rest and inner reflection. As the world outside slows down, covered in a blanket of stillness, we too are invited to retreat inward—taking time for contemplation and healing. Winter can evoke emotions of solitude, quietness, and even loneliness or isolation, yet it’s also a season where deep inner work can happen. It is a time to pause, gather strength, and prepare for the renewal that inevitably follows.
In counselling, I often encourage embracing life’s “winters” as necessary phases of rest and reflection. It’s easy to feel pressured to be productive, even during moments when we need to slow down. But true growth often comes from allowing ourselves the grace to rest and reflect, knowing that this period of stillness is just as important as moments of action. Winter teaches us that there is value in quiet, in pausing, and in taking time to heal after loss or hardship.
In her book “Wintering”, Katherine May beautifully said, “We have seasons when we flourish and seasons when the leaves fall from us, revealing our bare bones. Given time, they grow again.” How do you care for yourself during your “Winter”? What practices help you reflect and find peace in stillness?
Spring: A Time of Renewal and New Beginnings
Spring is a season of renewal, brimming with potential and possibility. Just as the world reawakens after winter, with buds blooming and life stirring, we also experience moments in our lives where everything feels full of promise. Spring brings emotions of optimism, hope, and anticipation, as we step into new chapters—whether it's starting a new job, entering a relationship, or embarking on a personal transformation. Yet, with every fresh start, there can also be hesitation—uncertainty as we step into the unknown. But just as the buds bloom despite the lingering chill, so too do we move forward, embracing growth with curiosity and hope.
In counselling, I encourage embracing these periods of renewal with a mindset of curiosity and possibility. It’s a time to plant the seeds for future growth, to nurture new ideas, relationships, or habits that will flourish in the months to come. Rather than fearing change, spring invites us to see it as an opportunity for personal growth and exploration.
Harriet Ann Jacobs wrote, “The beautiful spring came; and when nature resumes her loveliness, the human soul is apt to revive also.” Spring reminds us that just as nature blooms, so too can our spirits. Summer is a season of light and abundance, when life is in full bloom, and everything feels vibrant and alive. It represents the peak of energy, action, and joy—when we experience the fullness of our efforts and the richness of life around us. After the fresh beginnings of spring, summer arrives with its fullness—moments of abundance where life feels rich and rewarding. The emotions of summer—contentment, confidence, and joy—reflect times when we feel established, whether it’s success in our careers, fulfilment in relationships, or personal achievements that bring deep satisfaction.
In counselling, I encourage clients to recognise and fully experience these moments of abundance. It’s easy to rush through life’s “Summers” without pausing to appreciate the vibrancy they bring. Staying mindful and present during these seasons allows us to celebrate our wins and savour the richness of life. Summer reminds us that these moments of fullness, just like the season itself, are fleeting and worth cherishing.
As F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote in The Great Gatsby, “And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees... life was beginning over again with the summer.” How do you celebrate your own seasons of abundance? What does your “Summer” look like, and how do you honour it?

Couldn't have put it better. As my own career embarks on a new direction in the autumn, it is most definitely a letting go of what I have known for the last 15 years. As I go through the winter I will be taking stock and embedding new processes. Spring will come where I can build my experience and seek new developments and hopefully in the summer I should really be in the swing of things. I can then go on holiday :)
