Midlife, Ageing & Changing Roles

Counselling in Ascot, and Online/Telephone

Midlife and ageing are often described as stages of “wisdom” or “acceptance” - but for many people, these chapters are far more complex.

There may be moments of clarity, yes, but also grief, uncertainty, identity questions, shifts in purpose, and a sense that life is changing in ways you didn’t expect.

Your roles may be changing.
Your relationships may look different.
Your body may feel different.
Your sense of meaning may be evolving.
And you may be noticing yourself in a new way - or not feeling seen at all.

If you’re here, you may be trying to navigate this transition with more compassion, steadiness, and connection to who you’re becoming.

Midlife Transitions Touch Every Part of Life

This stage can bring:

  • identity shifts

  • changes in family roles (children leaving home, becoming a grandparent, caring for ageing parents)

  • relationship changes

  • adjustments to work and purpose

  • body and health changes

  • questions about meaning, mortality, or direction

  • feelings of invisibility or being overlooked

  • a quiet grief for who you used to be

Even when positive things are happening around you, it can still feel like something inside is changing - or slipping away.

You Might Recognise Yourself in These Questions

  • Why don’t I feel like myself anymore?

  • What is my role now that the people around me need me less - or differently?

  • Why do I feel invisible, overlooked, or “past my peak”?

  • How do I cope with the physical changes I’m noticing?

  • Why do I feel nostalgic for earlier versions of my life?

  • What is my purpose now?

  • Is it normal to feel this unsettled at this stage?

These are common, deeply human questions - even if people rarely say them out loud.

The Emotional and Practical Weight of Midlife & Ageing

Emotionally

  • a sense of loss or grief

  • frustration, sadness, or irritability

  • anxiety about the future

  • shame or discomfort about ageing

  • low mood or loss of confidence

  • a feeling of being “in-between” chapters

Relationally

  • changing dynamics with partners

  • children becoming more independent

  • caring for ageing parents

  • shifting social circles

  • feeling disconnected or “out of sync”

Physically

  • changes in energy or stamina

  • menopause or hormonal shifts

  • altered body image

  • chronic pain or health concerns

Existentially

  • searching for meaning

  • questioning past choices

  • imagining the next chapter

  • fear of decline or being alone

Midlife is not a crisis - it is an evolution.
But evolution can feel messy, emotional, and uncertain.

Imagine…

…moving through this chapter with more grace, self-kindness, and clarity about who you are becoming - not just who you’ve been.

Imagine rediscovering parts of yourself that were overshadowed by roles, responsibilities, or expectations.

Imagine feeling more grounded, more visible, and more connected to your own worth.

How Therapy Can Help

Therapy offers a reflective, supportive space to:

  • explore who you are beneath the roles you’ve held

  • reconnect with purpose, meaning, and identity

  • understand the grief or longing that may arise

  • rebuild confidence and self-worth

  • make sense of relationship or family shifts

  • navigate physical changes without judgment

  • tend to fears about ageing or the future

  • create a life that feels aligned with who you are now

You don’t have to navigate this chapter alone - or pretend it feels easier than it does.

Why I’m a Good Fit for This Work

Much of my work is rooted in supporting people through identity changes and life transitions - the moments when the old no longer fits and the new hasn’t fully formed.

My approach is gentle, grounded, and attuned to the emotional, relational, and existential layers of midlife and ageing.

I offer a space to explore these changes honestly, without pressure or expectation.
Together, we can make sense of what this chapter means for you and who you are becoming within it.
